I Am a Slave to the Writing Process

Writers should write for themselves. I’ve stated this many times to my peers and teachers alike. Although writers may write to entertain others, it is still for themselves. They like to know someone picked up their work and gave it the time of the day. They like to know someone took their work and laid down in bed with it for a few minutes. They like to know young adults gab about the characters in their story. And they like to know someone spent a buck or two. Writers write for themselves. They write for the inner satisfaction. That is why I am not a writer and why my writing process isn’t sincere. I do not sit around and fantasize about a character who must go on a quest. I do not conjure up a magical world in which an amazing, epic journey takes place. I get up at 6 AM, shower, drive to school, go to my classes, attend drama practice, do homework, eat something, and go to bed. I live in reality. When I come to school every morning, I sit down in the commons a nd check my schedule for the week. My head is full of   spinning, groggy nonsense. I usually just sit there and think of nothing but the ensuing doom that is the work load I will receive throughout the day. And I do receive it. Worksheets and projects and papers galore. So much I could dump it on the ground, out of my folders, and recreate a whole tree out of it. I could give a tree life again. I could restore the natural order. And I work so hard. I work so, so hard. For one thing. College . . . I work so hard for more schooling. A harder education. Four more years of it, to be exact. I spend all my time striving for the green light to attend a university that will send me spiraling into financial debt. This whole process just seems so redundant. If I had it my way, maybe I would go to college. From my classes, I would learn how to speak really clean Spanish. Meanwhile, I would be working and saving my money. Then, once I got out of college, I would take a train down to South America and evade my student loans. I would change my name and spend my days living a carefree, open-minded life, working in some trash hole restaurant, where the kitchens were stained with grease, but the food was authentic. I could rise in the morning, greeted by the mild sun. The wind would blow on my tanned skin. Maybe I would just keep traveling from place to place. Perhaps I would meet friends in every country and I could stay with them when I visit, if they were so gracious. Maybe I’d lose weight. Maybe. That all certainly sounds like a great novel. But I don’t daydream. And I’m not a writer. So forget that.    That’s what I would do. If I could do it. But I can’t. Like I said, I live in reality.    So, I get up at 6 AM, shower, drive to school, go to my classes, attend drama practice, do homework, eat something, and go to bed. So I pump out papers endlessly in the hopes I will pull through the school year with good g rades to impress my family and my peers and my teachers. And so I will apply to a nice college and attend classes there. I will work endlessly to pay back my student loans. Writers should write for themselves. I write for others. Although writers may write to entertain others, it is still for themselves. Although I may write to entertain others, it’s really just to impress them. Writers like to know someone picked up their work and gave it the time of the day. I like to know a teacher picked up my work and graded it in a timely manner. Writers like to know someone took their work and laid down in bed with it for a few minutes. I like to know a teacher checked off all the appropriate boxes I was required to fill. Writers like to know young adults gab about the characters in their story. I like to know young adults are on the same track as me. And writers like to know someone spent a buck or two. I like to know I have a buck or two. Writers write for themselves. I write for others. Writers write for the inner satisfaction. I write for others’ inner satisfaction. That is why I am not a writer and why my writing process isn’t sincere. There is no process. Just a mad dash to get it written in a satisfactory manner in the hopes it will come back to me with high marks. If that’s not a strong enough image to end on, then please picture a young adult who is typing away on her laptop feverishly, with thoughts of financial doom and existential crisis looming over her in a sadly cartoonish thought bubble over her head.

Open Campus free essay sample

Student rights earned My name is Diana V. I am a student at Foothill High School and I am writing an essay on whether or not high schools should have an open lunch campus. Here are some of my ideas. I believe sophomores and higher grade levels should be able to leave for lunch and come back by the next class. When the school keeps students on campus it makes the students want to leave. First of all, the food isnt as good as it would be for ex. At McDonalds or Taco bell, everyone knows cafeteria food is not that appetizing. For students to concentrate better, dont we need a good meal? I think so. Second of all, if the school is concerned about students ditching classes, it wouldnt be such a bad idea to keep track of attendance after lunch. Confront the student about their skipping and punish them for it. We will write a custom essay sample on Open Campus or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Punishment could mean cleaning the tables after everyone at lunch, after school detention, or taking away off campus privileges. Third of all, when students leave campus and COME BACK, it shows dedication to return and learn. Also students learn responsibility and its helping us be ready for our independent life as adults. Thank you for taking your time reading this:) Report Post Like Reply13 Yes, remember the good old days When people dont confine them to a little bubble for fear that there is a 0. 00001% chance something remotely bad will happen? People today are so scared for tiny, trivial things. More freedom would bring more experience in life, more fun, and more choices. Things are going to happen anyways, why not have some fun? In addition, bored students are not good learners. Some students would rather stare at a black wall than sit through class. A little break outside of campus will definitely reinvigorate them. Report Post Like Reply10 Yes, but with reasonable limitations. High school is an important transitional time. Children start becoming adults, and that transformation should include new freedoms and responsibilities. An open campus, particularly for seniors, is an important step to the independence of adulthood that the students will experience upon finishing high school. However, an open campus is probably not appropriate for freshmen or sophomores. Additionally, there should be restrictions in place to prevent students from abusing the system, such as revoking open campus rights if a student fails to attend scheduled classes. Report Post Like Reply20 Yes, But In A Limited Way Only The open campus policy is okay as long as there are strictly enforced rules. Typically, only seniors should be able to leave campus for lunch, since many of them are closing in on legal age. Freshmen, however, shouldnt be allowed to leave. Plus, the open campus policy should be treated as a privilege that can be taken away. Posted by: rpr Report Post Like Reply Challenge00 We should be able to have an open campus I think that we should have an open campus. An open campus would let everyone have fresh air at least once a day. We are stuck inside for seven and a half hours a day! We go into school in the morning when the sun is still down, the teachers have the shades on the windows shut to keep the cold air out, and we leave school when the sun is up and when you walk outside for the first time in seven hours, the sun is really bright and it hurts your eyes. When we get home we have homework and chores to do, and some kids have jobs that are also inside! And when they get home it might be dark and cold outside and they might have other responsibilities they have to do. I think an open campus would be a good thing in our school because it would free up space in the cafeteria so we wouldn’t be as crammed as we are now and it would be a chance to get fresh air in our lungs. I think that kids should be able to go to subway or Frank’s for lunch. Students should learn the ways of choice, time management, and comprehension of the real world if we leave for lunches. Open campus would give students the chance to prove that they can be responsible and manage time like they would have to do with a job.. It would also give students a chance to get a little break from school then come back and be ready to focus. Report Post Like Reply00 Support the economy Profit of local restaurants and fast food places will increase, due to the rise of high school customers. Also the school lunches are loaded with preservatives and additives. The quality of the food is very poor, and not everyone is obese. Why do the rest of us need to eat this crap for lunch. We should allow this policy as a privilege for Juniors and Seniors. Other schools allow it as a privilege for good grades and citizenship. I believe that the policy would be a good incentive for students to get better grades. The ability to leave early, arrive late, leave during study halls (then return for next period), and leaving to go out to lunch (returning by next period), would be something I would be willing to work for and an inspiration to get good grades. It also shows responsibility that a student can leave and return on their own. Report Post

Carried Along With the Crowd Essay Example

Carried Along With the Crowd Essay Example Carried Along With the Crowd Essay Carried Along With the Crowd Essay Essay Topic: The Things They Carried Remount yourself to 1692, to a small town in Massachusetts, USA, called Salem. Imagine all you believe is dictated by lies, weak arguments and evilness. Imagine you are accused of witchcraft and the town that saw you grow up, the town where your dreams and hopes where born, turns the back on you. Imagine, just for a moment, on having the power to decide peoples death, by just accusing them of something theyve never done. Imagine the ambition growing inside you. Imagine, being Abigail for a second, Was what she did justifiable? Is ambition stronger than a persons moral convictions and principles?   Do you rather have one innocent person die than watch ten suspected witches having their lives ended because of a misjudgment and false accusations? The line between truth and dishonesty is so thin and easily corrupted, sometimes people cannot see the difference, with an inaccurate and distorted vision of truth and reality, people can make huge mistakes, and be certain that what theyre doing is right. How can you know if youre doing the right thing. Conscience doesnt always speak loud enough for you to hear. It doesnt always show you the right way to go, sometimes, just as a result of following the crowd; you can make horrible mistakes, terminating the life of people that do not deserve it. This is exactly what happened in Salem, the town that inspired the novel The Crucible, where every person in town ended believing in the bad intentioned accusations Abigail Williams made, this girl was so intelligent, she convinced the people around her of her version of the truth and twisted the facts and history for her own convenience. Therefore, truth is distorted. Truth goes hand in hand with justice; justice is made by doing the right thing, following the truth. If the truth becomes indistinct, justice can easily be applied to the wrong people. She thinks to dance with me on my wifes grave! And well she might, for I thought of her softly. God help me, I lusted, and there is a promise in such sweat. But it is a whores vengeance, and you must see it (Act III) Here, Proctor makes his last attempt on saving his wifes life. This is a desperate seek for the real justice, based on the real truth. Sometimes, one cannot prove that one is telling the truth, and the impotent feeling urges your soul for the rest of your days. Justice is based also on our believes, on what we believe is the truth, by not having enough bases and proofs to make a fair trial, people seeked for theyre believes, a dogmatic truth. A fire, a fire is burning! I hear the boot of Lucifer, I see his filthy face! And it is my face and yours, Danforth! For them that quail to bring men out of ignorance, as I have quailed, and as you quail now when you know in all your black hearts that this be fraud- God damns our kind especially and we will burn, we will burn together! (Act III) Proctor answering Mary Warrens petition to help her save her life, he suddenly sees himself condemned for believing what is real and not being heard or noticed. All these people who found themselves in the same position as Proctor are faith defendants of innocence, but it was so hard back then to prove your innocence, I mean, How could you prove the opposite of an accusation if, your accusation had no more evidence than the words of a perturbed girl? I speak to my own sins; I cannot judge another. I have no tongue for it. John Proctor, being innocent of all accusations, in order to save his life, confesses witchcraft, yet refuses to accuse anyone else to maintain his freedom and innocence. He knows hes innocent, he knows hes fallen into Abigails trap, but he will not play her game, he refuses to make false and not proved accusations. The word for his actions is loyalty. He is loyal to his beliefs, loyal to his beloved. He feels a certain loyalty also towards the truth. Even in his moments of pure desperation and desolation, he doesnt leave his honor and loyalty aside. Let you not mistake your duty as I mistook my own. I came into this village like a bridegroom to his beloved, bearing gifts of high religion; the very crowns of holy law I brought, and what I touched with my bright confidence, it died; and where I turned the eye of my great faith, blood flowed up. (Act IV) Here, reverend Hale is attempting to make Elizabeth Proctor convince her husband to confess of witchcraft, trying to save more lives. In other words, he is telling her to be loyal to her beliefs, but to do all it takes to stay alive. See how, because of Abigails appalling dishonesty, people must leave aside theyre beliefs, sense of truth and anger and impotent feelings? The sense of betrayal leading to punishment has also to do with my thesis at the beginning. Betrayal is what Abigail practices with everybody she wishes. Her soul is so full of evil that she has no remorse or whatsoever when accusing. This makes all the supposed witches innocent and free of proofs that may say the opposite. When, weaker than her, Abigails friends and accomplices in her sins hesitate on theyre actions, Abigail threatens them and punishes theyre minds and thoughts. Everyone is so terrified of her; she has got all the power to herself. And mark this. Let either of you breathe a word, or the edge of a word, about the other things, and I will come to you in the black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you. And you know I can do it; I saw Indians smash my dead parents heads on the pillow next to mine and I have seen some reddish work done at night, and I can make you wish you have never seen the sun go down! (Act I) She is secretly admitting her betrayal, her evilness, but she will not stop, or surrender, or hesitate about her decisions. By all of the above I can prove that, because of the loss of sense of truth and proofs to make a proper trial and sentence, it is preferable to let one innocent person die than to assassinate ten supposed witches. Ten souls full of resentment, anger, impotence. Quiet mouths screaming in pain to themselves, silent minds stormed with thoughts, not being able to prove theyre innocence. i Must ten accused of witchcraft be murdered because of a flaw of society? Because the crowd decided to believe in something as mean as lies and obscurity? It is relevant to point out how people, in order not to be accused of different can act in an irrational way. What we can do now is simply to question ourselves constantly our beliefs, our senses of truth, our moral convictions, because theres only one person needed to scatter sinfulness and amorality to convert a whole town, to disturb and distort entire generations, entire villages, entire countries. And you can some day find yourself in the position of the town people, Will you fall into Abigails death trap? Will you stand up for what you think is right? It is entirely up to you, one person can make the difference, even if he or she dies attempting.

Economics in the early renaissance Research Paper

Economics in the early renaissance - Research Paper Example The economic development at the time portrayed the economy as a cohesive structure with numerous facets all of which function independently albeit in unison to enhance the economic growth of the entire society. The numerous sectors in the early renaissance economies thrived on peaceful economies coupled with systematic integration with other neighboring economies in order to expand their economies. Specific dynasties and think tanks such as Aristotle and Plato contributed fundamental economic ideas that fostered the development of the economies as I discuss in the easy below. In the research of the early renaissance economy, I research the theories fostered by numerous classical and neoclassical economists such as Adam Smith and David Ricardo. Effective taxation refers to a system of taxation in which the government demands a fair share of the citizens’ earning thus leaving the citizens with an adequate amount to foster the economic growth of the countries. At a time that the church played an important role in te formulation and implementation of policies, taxation was a fundamental issue since the royal dynasties often collaborated with the church to defraud the people. However, in order for the countries to register economic growth, the leadership had to implement effective policies that would enhance effective taxation, a system that would curb exploitation and enhance the appropriate utilization of the expenditure. Among the early cities worse governments exhibited effective management of resources was Florence. Florence was a small inland cit y in Italy that unlike other inland cities became economic success. Among the reasons for Florence’s success was the use of the resources in enhancing the liquidity of the economy. The Medici circulated the money in the economy through increased public spending thus resulting in the thriving of arts among other sectors of the economy. This way, the government raised the purchasing power

Persuasive speech on child labor Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Persuasive speech on child labor - Essay Example In 2008, children aged between 5 and 17 made approximately 215 million child laborers worldwide. Children are adversely affected by child labor as they are still in their development stages of life. It is clear then that child labor has negative effects and should therefore be put to a stop. The effects of child labor are immense. Through the deprivation of their childhood, their development, mentally and physically is widely affected. It interferes with schooling by having to combine long and heavy work with school, having to obligingly leave school prematurely or denying them the important chance of school attendance (International Labor Organization, 2014). Additionally, the tasks are harmful to the children as they are still growing and the heavy physical work could cause damage. The worst forms of child labor include slavery; offering or involving a child in illicit activities; using a child for prostitution, pornographic performances and production; and work likely to harm the child’s morals, health or safety. There are several factors that influence the working of children, poverty being the most compelling. As most families spend most of their meager income on food, supplementary income from working children is much needed (UN, 2014). Other factors include lack of education where it is unaffordable; market demand, as child labor is cheap; and culture and traditions that allow children to spend most of their time laboring. It is also prevalent in households affected by economic crises and natural disasters. The menace is persistent with reluctant national laws and policies for the protection of children. The effects of child labor are devastating, with heightened risk of injury, illness and even death due to dangers involved. Approximately 22,000 children die from work-related accidents every year (Gifford, 2009). Physical strain may damage their bones and joints, causing spinal injuries, disabilities and even

Charles Dickens Hard Times Essay -- Charles Dickens Hard Times Essays

Charles Dickens' Hard Times Charles Dickens’s novel Hard Times critiques the use of extreme utilitarianism as an acceptable means to governing a society in which citizens are able to lead happy, productive, flourishing lives. â€Å"Just the facts,†19th century English utilitarianism argued, are all one needs to flourish. Those answers that we can arrive at by way of mathematical, logical reasoning are all needed to live a full human life. Hard Times shows however that a â€Å"just the facts† philosophy creates a community inhospitable to the needs of one another, a society nearly void of human compassion, and one lacking in morality. Underlying the novel’s argument is the Aristotelian concept that the primary purpose of government is to correctly educate citizens in morality and, consequentially, to cultivate an upright social environment where all are inspired to flourish. How fitting, then, that early in the novel we are introduced to Thomas Gradgrind, educator and owner of the M’choakumchild school where â€Å"just the facts† are taught and the apotheosis of 19th century English utilitarianism. Although â€Å"Gradgrind intellect† is calculated to be the best way to maximize happiness, in the M’choakumchild class room it soon becomes clear that its adherents are the most unhappy and immoral in Coketown, even more so than the â€Å"Hands† who suffer from its cruelty indirectly. If the purpose of the state is to cultivate moral individuals who are able to flourish together, the state built on utilitarian values inevitably fails. Part of the inadequacy of utilitarianism and its statistical approach to addressing human problems is its objective, mass-quantity view of people. Gradgrind’s description alone captures the disconnected nature and col... ...human nature† makes for a bare-bones human existence, replete with crime, immorality, greed, and as especially demonstrated in Louisa’s case, unhappiness. Mr. Sleary’s compassion gives voice to Dickens’s hope for a more unselfish perspective on human motivation. His critique concludes that the success of government lies in realistically evaluating humanity in all of its general and idiosyncratic tendencies. As Nussbaum says in her essay, Dickens does not call for a â€Å"relativistic† approach to governance but one more in touch with the realities and complexities of being human. The Tragedy Of Hamlet By William Shakespeare - 1874 Words

Revenge is a twisted concept, and has the ability to push people to their absolute limit. This is true when discussing William Shakespeare s play, The Tragedy of Hamlet, where the main character, Hamlet, begins going insane after the death of his father. His insanity is caused by a recent death in his family, his mother’s remarriage, the growing effects of trying to be something you are not, and the burning desire for revenge. His withering state of mind progressively worsens over time and is seen throughout the story line by everyone, that is everyone but Hamlet himself. Hamlet does not believe the things he is doing or events that are occurring are anywhere out of the ordinary, but perhaps that is because his imitation of insanity is†¦show more content†¦Ã¢â‚¬Å"O, that this too too solid flesh would melt, thaw and resolve itself into a dew! Or that the everlasting had not fix d his canon gainst self-slaughter! O God! God! How weary, stale, flat and unprofitable, se em to me all the uses of this world!† (I.ii.129-134). Here, Hamlet talks about how he wishes his skin would melt and he die. He is in complete despair over his fathers death and can not imagine what would push his father to committing suicide, or so he thinks. He produces pity for himself and begins to conjure up the theme of insanity here. Both of these events alert the reader that Hamlet is a very upset man and that he might engage in certain actions that someone with the right state of mind might not. Furthermore, aside from being upset, Hamlet also seems very confused at his father and at the world. He does not understand why his father, of all things, should have been taken from him and especially in the way that he did leave this world. He yells to God and does not think he deserves any of this. This quote provides the reader with the knowledge of prior cloudiness in judgement before Hamlet finds out who killed his father, which only adds to the fact that he does not rea lize his growing state of insanity over the time of the play. After partially accepting his father’s death, Hamlet has a talk with the ghost of his father and acquires the information of who killed his father. Once he realizes that the killer is King Claudius, Hamlet starts to convey
